Elvaretta Marie Howard, (called Etta) was born 13 April 1855 at Hamburg Township, Livingston County, Michigan, the daughter of John Howard and his wife, Louisa Caroline Placeway. Etta Married 14 February 1878 to Reuben Clark Reed, the son of Linus Reed and his wife, Harriet Steele. Etta and Reuben were the parents of five known children; Howard C., Louisa P., Rex A., Ray J., and Jay K. Reed. Etta died 10 February 1925 while on a vacation with her husband, at Avon Park, Florida. She is buried beside her husband in the Lake View Cemetery in Howell, Livingston County, Michigan. Her obituary read; MRS. R. C. REED - Highly Respected Howell Lady Died In Florida - February tenth where she and her husband were spending the winter. Etta M. Howard was born in Hamburg, Livingston County, Michigan, April 13, 1855. Moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Howard to Howell in 1872. Was married to R. Clark Reed February 14, 1878, to whom she has been a faithful wife for 47 years. Moved to Oceola in the Spring of 1878 where she lived until she moved back to Howell in 1906. This union was blessed with five children to whom she has been a most faithful and indulgent mother. In every community where she lived her care and solitude was one of the great factors in the neighborhood. She united with the Methodist Church in Howell in 1876 and was ever loyal to her faith and her church. When the temperance movement was unpopular in its infancy, she was one of a band of most faithful workers who denied themselves to advance the interest of humanity. She passed on to her reward at Avon Park, Florida, February 10, 1925 after less than an hour's illness. Her large circle of friends, five children, nineteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, with her husband, stand today to rise up and call her blessed and to pay tribute to the memory of an unassuming and conscientious wife and mother. The funeral held at the home here Monday afternoon was largely attended. Among those present were friends from Port Huron, Detroit, Lansing, Mt. Pleasant, Adrian and Olivet. Rev. E. P. Bennett, her pastor officiated, assisted by Rev. D. C. Littlejohn of Port Huron and G. L. Adams of Fowlerville.
