Joseph Placeway served in the Civil War as a private in Company G, 3rd Regiment, Michigan Calvary. His pension file gives his height as 5 feet 9 3/4 inches and 171 lbs at the age of 60 years. Joseph enlisted 10 February 1864 and mustered out 29 September 1865. In 1868-1869, 1872-1873, Joseph served as the Treasurer of Brighton Grange, and in 1879 he served as a Trustee for Brighton. Joseph and Emily were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Brighton. Joseph died 1 August 1899 and Emily died 29 January 1914, both are buried in the Old Brighton Cemetery, section # 30, at Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan.
