About 1835/36 Joseph and his brother William, along with other family members, moved to Michigan, settling first in Shiawassee County, and about 1840 he removed to Livingston County, Michigan. Joseph died 1853 at Brighton and is buried in the Old Brighton Cemetery, section 30, at Brighton, Livingston County, Michigan. His widow Ann later remarried to Manley Smith.

03.) Letter sent by the Livingston County, Michigan, Genealogical Society states a petition was filed by
Ann Mariah Placeway Smith, former wife of Joseph Placeway. (Ann had remarried to Manley Smith).
Joseph left an estate of $1500.00 to his children; Mary E. Gidley, wife of Edwin B. Gidley of
Washtenaw County, Matilda Placeway, Joseph E. Placeway, George L. Placeway of Washtenaw
County, and John M. Placeway. Land in section 31 of Brighton was divided among his children and
he had additional lots in Brighton Village. Manley Smith was the executor of this estate in 1857.

Ep-SW, May 2, 1836, of Allegany Co., New York. Sells in 1849, of Brighton. In census of Genoa,
1840. - Joseph E., buys land in sec. 31, Brighton, 1850. Family buys land in sec. 31, Brighton,
Wp-SE, May 3, 186(?). Sell some in 1863, of Brighton. Heirs were George and John W. (sic M.)
Placeway, both minors. Joseph E. Placeway, Matilda Smith & Mary Gidley (children of Joseph) buy
lots # 1, 2, and
B-9, Gales Add to Brighton Village, Oct. 29, 1846.
