Silas Placeway served in the Civil War and attained the rank of Corporal in Company D, 15th Regiment of the Michigan Volunteer Infantry. He received a pension, cert. # 427028, per records found in the National Archives, Washington, DC. Silas was married on 1 January 1867 at Hamburg Township, Livingston County, Michigan to Louisa A. Collins, daughter of Norman Collins and his wife, Sarah D. Dayton. The service was preformed by Oliver J. Perrin, a Minister of the Gospel, and witnessed by Norman Collins and William Placeway. They lived in Hamburg Township until 1874 and removed to St. Louis, Gratiot County, where they remained for the rest of their lives. Silas died 26 December 1894 at the age of 54 years from heart failure, and his wife, Louisa died 27 February 1898, both are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis, Gratiot County
