When Lola Ann Placeway was 14 years old, her father, William Henry Placeway filed a petition September 1883 on behalf of Lola and her sister Ettie., both minor children, that he be guardian for his children's estate of $500.00. Caroline M. (Salmon) Placeway, their mother was deceased and the girls were to get half interest in the dower left to them by their grandmother, Ann Salmon, widow of Simeon P. Salmon, deceased. Also included was the following property; NE 1/4 of NE 1/4 and NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 section 8 - Hamburg. SE 1/4 of SW 1/4 and SW 1/4 of SW 1/4 section 5 - Hamburg. E 1/2 of SW 1/4 of SE 1/4 section 6 - Hamburg, all worth $8000.00 This property was sold to Angelett B. Salmon of Hamburg for $1800.00 Ettie received a sum of $1200.00 in 1887 and Lola received $1200.00 in 1890. Lola was a professor of chemistry at Iowa State University in Ames, Story County, Iowa. From the records of Ellis Island, were learn that Lola A. Placeway had taken a trip to Europe in 1907 and arrived back at Ellis Island 21 August 1907. Her age was 38 at that time and she was a resident of Ames, Iowa. She arrived on the ship "Caronia" departing from Queenstown, Cork, Muster, Ireland. Lola came back to Livingston County Michigan for her marriage to Alfred A. Bennett, who was also a professor in California. Lola and Alfred were married 19 June 1913 at Hartland Township, Livingston County. (* Alfred had been married to her aunt, Permilia Placeway who died in 1912. Alfred was a professor at the Iowa State University in Ames. Evidently, from her obituary information, Lola was later married to Rev. Pearson and died in1930 at Anchum, California. Sources; 01.) The obituary of Lola (Placeway)(Bennett) Pearson found in the "Pinckney Dispatch" 15 Jan 1930 issue. Clella Fish received word from Mrs. Sarah Pearson March of Orange California last week saying that Mrs. Lola Placeway Pearson had died at Anchum, Cal., several days ago following a major operation. The deceased was a daughter of the late, William Henry Placeway of Pinckney, but has lived in California for years where she engaged in teaching previous to her marriage to Rev. Pearson. Surviving are her husband, one sister Mrs. Effie Burgess of Hartland and two brothers, Brayton and Clayton of Detroit. Funeral arrangements had not yet been made at the time of the message. |
