Charles Placeway graduated from the Brighton High School in 1874 and attended the University at Ann Arbor, Michigan. After finishing his course at the university, he worked as an apprentice for The Brighton Citizen Newspaper for two years. In 1878, he branched out for himself and established the South Lyon Hearld, the first newspaper ever published in that town. Charles sold that business and established the Pinckney Gazette, of Pinckney Township, Livingston County. Six months later he removed his office to Brighton Township and started the Brighton Weekly Argus in 1880 being it's Editor and Proprietor. Charles married on 19 October 1881 at Brighton Township to Miss Alta E. Case, the daughter of Ira W. Case and his wife, Fidelia S. (nee Eddy). Charles and Alta were the parents of three known children, Edna S., William C., and Gertrude Placeway. Charles and Alta were divorced and he remarried on 23 November 1911 at Marion Township, Livingston County, Michigan to Mrs. Abbie H. (Buck) Lyons, the daughter of Joseph Buck. This ceremony was performed by J. H. Reilly and witnessed by Mr. & Mrs. George B. Driver.
