The obituary of Matilda (Placeway) Smith read: While Mrs. Smith was waiting for a train her earthly career ended. She had received a telegram announcing the sudden death of her brother in-law, E. B. Gidley, a prominent Grand Rapids man and at one time the chief of police of Ann Arbor, and gone to the depot to take the train for that place when she was taken with a severe fit of coughing which together with heart trouble of which she had been a sufferer, son ended her life. Medical assistance was summoned and everything done, but death ended had claimed her before she could even speak to her husband and daughter who arrived there shortly after her attack. She was pronounced dead by Dr. McHinch. Mr. Gidley dropped dead while in the YMCA hall attending a lecture of heart trouble. The remains brought to this place Wednesday for interment. Mrs. Smith's maiden name was Matilda Placeway, youngest sister of J. E. Placeway of this place, and J. M. Placeway of Webberville, and Mrs. Edwin Gidley of Grand Rapids. The deceased was born in Genoa, nearly 61 years ago and remained a resident of Livingston County to the day of her death. She leaves a husband, two daughters, Mrs. John Morgen and Millie, and a host of friends. Funeral this Thursday at the M. E. Church and remains will be laid to rest in the village cemetery. * note, the obituary of Edwin Gidley found in the same newspaper. The newspaper clipping did not identify the newspaper, but it is assumed it was a Brighton newspaper. Sources; 01.)
