John M. Placeway enlisted 11 April 1865 in Company D, 8th Regiment of the Michigan Cavalry during the Civil War, serving under Captain Hix. He was honorably discharged 22 September 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. In his Civil War pension file, his physical description is given as; height 5' 9", dark complexion, brown hair, and gray eyes. John married 6 December 1866 at Brighton Township, Livingston County, Michigan to Carolyn S. Morgan. The ceremony performed by Rev. Jno. W. Crippen, a minister of the gospel. The wedding witnessed by Richard Lyon and Orson Vanamburg. Carolyn died in 1898 and John died in 1905, both are buried in the Rowley Cemetery, section # 33, at Locke, Ingham County, Michigan.
